On Wednesday night the Austin Aztex (USL) traveled to Toyota Field to take on the San Antonio Scorpions (NASL) in the 3rd round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The visitors notched a dominant 2-0 win and toppled the defending NASL champions for the second consecutive time. The victory sees the Aztex through to the 4th round of cup play for the first time in their history. The night was a historic one for the league as well as the Aztex, as the USL defeated the NASL in all 7 of their Cup competitions.

The first half of Wednesday’s match was mostly back and forth with both clubs having opportunities to score. Austin’s best chance came through an early long distance strike from Guaraci that was spilled by Daryl Sattler. Additionally, several long runs from Kris Tyrpak looked dangerous but were not successful. Just before the break, a bad set of passes in front of the Austin net gave Eric Hassli a short range chance that was denied by goalkeeper Devin Perales. After a tense 45 minutes, the match remained scoreless at half.

Early in the second, Mikey Ambrose scored his first goal as a professional, after the Scorpions attempted to clear an Aztex corner kick in the 50th minute. Ambrose made a light touch on the ball then ripped a thunderous shot that found the back of the Scorpions net to give Austin the lead. The Aztex would never look back, as they controlled possession and continued to push forward looking for a second goal to seal the evening for the blue and gold.

Trevin Caesar, a former SA Scorpion was awarded his 2014 NASL championship ring in a pre-match ceremony, but he was not kind in his return trip to the Alamo City. Throughout the match his pace consistently tested the Scorpion defense. His chance to close the door on San Antonio’s Open Cup run came on the counter attack. Andres Cuero received a long pass forward and found a waiting Caesar who made the strike that yielded the 2-0 final scoreline.

The victorious Aztex are now scheduled to match up with the Houston Dynamo on June 17th for the 4th round of cup play at BBVA Stadium. The Aztex defeated the Dynamo in a 2015 preseason match against what looked to be Houston’s best 11. A former MLS Cup Champion with the Dynamo, we know Aztex Coach Paul Dalgish will eagerly anticipate the match. Eberly’s Army, who traveled more than 50 members to San Antonio, cheered wildly as they celebrated their prize, the supporters trophy known as the Queso Bowl. The supporters group is also organizing a bus trip to Houston. As logistical details become more clear, look for more information on the away trip from Eberly’s Army. Tickets for the next US Open Cup match will be sold through the Houston Dynamo.

*All of us at Reckless Challenge are extending thoughts and prayers to those impacted by the recent storms that have devastated portions of Central and South Texas. One of the areas impacted was House Park, home of the Austin Aztex. Early reports are that House Park will not be available any time soon, and the Aztex are looking for alternatives. Currently the club is working with community leaders to identify a central location to complete their season. Sources tell us that the Aztex are looking at multiple locations including school district and university sites that might be available.
